September 18, 1999Dr. Cowan,This is a statement from me documenting the goings on in my self-contained Behavioral Disorders classroom. On Thursday, September16, 1999, I played your Peak Achievement tape to the entire class at about 7:45 a.m. We followed the voice instructions for 35 minutes, and then went to our schoolwork. After the tape, the class went about their work in normal fashion, however, each student was noticeably more calm and quiet. During this time, the class received two public address announcements for individual students to go to the office. In the first request, the office lady asked, “Is this Mr. Holden’s classroom?!” In the second request, a different person called down from the office; and she also questioned whether she was talking to Mr. Holden’s class or if she had the wrong room. In both requests, the office made comments on how much more quiet my class was as compared to other days. This tranquillity lasted to about 10:15 a.m. (2 ½ hours). The Peak Achievement microbreak training was taken seriously by the 7th and 8th grade students, and it showed. There were rewards for doing what the voice on the tape said, but there was no reward given for keeping the calm feeling the tape produced for 2 ½ hours. This was done by each of the 6 students. We listened to the tape again Friday, September 17, 1999. There was one comment, “I’m going to laugh when he says ‘like a wet noodle’.” No other of the six students said anything. I felt each student, every one of them, was sincere on their second microbreak training session. The class stayed calm until about 10:00 a.m. Most truly, Charles Holden Exceptional Child Education /Learning Behavioral Disorders Teacher Jefferson County Public Schools Louisville, Kentucky Second Letter Third Letter |
